Subject: Using the UDMAUPDT.EXE Utility Summary: To identify and resolve potential symptoms that may arise when using DiamondMax UDMA/66 (and newer) hard drives on older UDMA/33 Motherboards with an older, Core BIOS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disclaimer: This Document is provided as is without any warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. This is an Advanced Utility and its use is recommended for Advanced Users only. Overview: Some older Ultra DMA 33 motherboards with older BIOS' (revision date 10/28/98 and older) have exhibited compatibility issues with Ultra DMA/66/100 drives. The symptom manifests itself as a system hangs at boot, and performance problems. On some motherboards the system does not properly check the UDMA setting returned by the drive. The end result is that the motherboard attempts to set itself up in an unsupported mode. These issues arise because of a bug in the system's BIOS, NOT a problem with the Maxtor hard drive. Some System's will also have performance problems due to the controller chipset. To eliminate this problem, Maxtor has developed the UDMAUPDT.EXE The UDMAUPDT.EXE changes the Ultra DMA Mode for the following hard drive Families (and newer) ONLY: · DiamondMax 6800 · DiamondMax Plus 6800 · DiamondMax 36 · DiamondMax VL 17 · DiamondMax 40 · DiamondMax VL 20 · DiamondMax Plus 40 · DiamondMax 60 · DiamondMax VL 30 · DiamondMax Plus 40 UDMA/100 · DiamondMax 60 UDMA/100 · DiamondMax VL 30 UDMA/100 NOTE: 100UPDT.EXE is a self-extracting file containing: · UDMAUPDT.EXE - Utility for Changing the UDMA settings on Maxtor UDMA 66/100 hard drives · CHIPSET.DRV - Driver Database File · UDMAUPDT.TXT - This file Maxtor recommends that you copy 100UPDT.EXE to a formatted, 3.5-inch floppy diskette. Place the diskette containing 100UPDT.EXE in the "A:" drive, at the "A:" prompt type "100UPDT" to extract the files. The files must be extracted in order to execute WVSET.EXE. NOTE: This utility should ONLY be used if: · There is a DiamondMax 6800 (or newer) hard drive physically installed in the system. · The hard drive is attached to an IDE Interface port on the motherboard. · The IDE interface that the drive is connected to does not support Ultra DMA 66/100. Contact the motherboard or the controller card manufacturer if the interface is supposed to support Ultra DMA 66/100 and if problems still persist. PROCEDURE FOR USING UDMAUPDT.EXE: 1. Clean boot the system to an A: prompt. 2. Insert the diskette containing the UDMAUPDT.EXE. 3. From the A: prompt, type udmaupdt and press [Enter]. The following will be displayed: Select Ultra DMA Mode Utility -- Version 2.3 USAGE: COMMAND LINE INPUTS /dma: DMA Mode ( 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) 0 - UDMA mode 0 = UDMA 16 1 - UDMA mode 1 = UDMA 25 2 - UDMA mode 2 = UDMA 33 3 - UDMA mode 3 = UDMA 50 4 - UDMA mode 4 = UDMA 66 5 - UDMA mode 5 = UDMA 100 EXAMPLE COMMAND LINE INPUTS -- To set UDMA Mode to UDMA 33 Press any key to continue You will be returned to an A: prompt after the following is displayed. 4. From the A: prompt, type in UDMAUPDT /dma:n (to set the UDMA mode) and press [Enter]. The valid values for n are described above. This will execute the UDMA utility. Information will be displayed on the monitor indicating if drives are found and the action taken by the utility. In the example below "(Chip Set)" is the identifying information obtained from the IDE controller card (if installed) and / or the motherboard of the computer system. ! IMPORTANT NOTE ! - This utility will set each Maxtor hard drive to the maximum UDMA mode the drive is capable of operating in or the value of the command switch, which ever is less (e.g. if the drive is capable of UDMA 33 (mode 2) and the switch is set to UDMA 66 (mode 4) the drive will be set to UDMA 33 (mode 2) operations). If there is an IDE controller card installed in the computer system then a second set of information is displayed. The first set displayed is for the installed IDE Controller Card and the second for the motherboard. ! IMPORTANT ! - If a controller card is installed that utilizes a chipset not found in the CHIPSET.DRV file, the card and all devices attached will not be seen by this utility. Information for the motherboard will be displayed. If all IDE devices are connected to an unknown card the utility will report that no drives were found in the system. If this occurs contact Maxtor Technical Support and provide information about the controller card so that it can be investigated and the utility updated as appropriate. 5. Upon the completion of this utility, the system returns to the "A:" prompt. If you need any assistance or have any questions contact Maxtor Technical Assistance.
