If you received an error message following the restart in Step #11 above, review the troubleshooting suggestions in Section E below. SECTION E: TROUBLESHOOTING SUGGESTIONS FOR WINDOWS 95/98 If you receive a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) error message, then the RangeLAN2 Card has been properly installed in the computer. Contact your network administrator to determine if a DHCP resides on the network. If you have a DHCP server, confirm that the RangeLAN2 Card is synchronized to an Access Point on the network. If you do not have a DHCP server on the network, configure the RangeLAN2 Card with a valid IP address for the network from within the Control Panel's Network icon. If your network does not use TCP/IP to communicate, install the appropriate protocol for your network from within the Control Panel's Network icon. If you encounter a network adapter error or the RangeLAN2 Status Monitor reports that the card is not working properly while trying to upgrade a RangeLAN2 Card to version 1.4B0 in Windows 95/98, then follow the instructions below: 1. Open the Network icon and confirm that the following components appear in the Network Configuration list: Client for Microsoft Networks Proxim RangeLAN2 Card Adapter Proxim RangeLAN2 Driver API TCP/IP If you have an additional network adapter (such as Dial-up adapter or a wired Ethernet card), your Network Configuration list may contain more entries. 2. If the Network Configuration list does not contain a RangeLAN2 entry, go to the Device Manager and see if the Proxim RangeLAN2 card has an entry under the Network adapters category. If not, check the Other Devices category to determine if it contains an entry for a "Proxim PC LAN Card." If so, highlight and remove the Proxim PC LAN Card entry from the Device Manager. Once the entry has been removed, restart the computer and return to instructions above (step #9 of Section A if you are using a RangeLAN2 PC Card or step #11 of Section C if you are using a RangeLAN2 ISA or OEM Adapter). 3. If you have a RangeLAN2 PC Card and it does not appear in either the Device Manager (Network Adapters or Other Devices categories) or within the Network Configuration list, open the PC Card icon in the Control Panel in order to confirm that the PCMCIA services recognizes that the RangeLAN2 PC Card is properly inserted in the PCMCIA slot. If you are using a RangeLAN2 7100 ISA Card and the RangeLAN2 card appears neither in the Device Manager (Network Adapters or Other Devices categories) or within the Network Configuration list, confirm that the ISA card is properly seated in an ISA slot on the computer's motherboard. 4. If the RangeLAN2 card is one of the entries in the Network Configuration list, go to the Network Adapters category of the Device Manager and find the entry labeled "Proxim RangeLAN2 Card." If the RangeLAN2 entry has an "!" next to it, the card probably has a resource conflict and is trying to use an Interrupt Level (IRQ), I/O Base Address, or Memory Range which is either already in use or not available for use by the card. Note that the RangeLAN2 PC Card uses an Interrupt Level, an I/O Base Address, and a Memory Range; the RangeLAN2 ISA and OEM Adapters use only an Interrupt Level and I/O Base Address. If you are using a RangeLAN2 PC Card, double-click the Device Manager entry to view the properties for the card. Click on the Resources tab to see what system resources the card is trying to use. Manually change the resource settings for the card to find available resources which the card can use. Click for these new settings to take effect; you may be prompted to restart the computer. After the computer restarts, the RangeLAN2 PC Card should function properly. If you are using a RangeLAN2 7100 ISA Adapter, double-click the "Computer" entry in the Device Manager to view the list of resources currently in use by the computer. Make a note of what resources appear to be available. Go to the Network icon and highlight the "Proxim RangeLAN2 7100 ISA Adapter" entry in the configuration list. Click and choose the Advanced tab to view the current configuration settings for the card. Using the drop-down menu, change the value for the Interrupt Level and I/O Base Address if the default settings are conflicting with another system device. Note that if you change the I/O Base Address value in the "Proxim RangeLAN2 7100 Adapter Properties" screen, you must also change the dip switch settings on the back of the card. Refer to the RangeLAN2 7100 ISA Adapter manual for information on how to set the dip switch to the appropriate I/O Base Address value. Click to return to the Network configuration screen and click again to return to the Windows 95/98 desktop. Restart the computer when prompted. Alternatively, you may want to Shut Down the computer if you need to change the positions of the dip switches on the back of the ISA adapter. After the computer restarts, the RangeLAN2 ISA Adapter should function properly. NOTE: Typically, the Interrupt Level (IRQ) will be the cause of the resource conflict. You may find that your computer has no free Interrupt Level available for use. In this case, try setting the Interrupt Level to a value of 3 or 4 which generally corresponds to COM2 and COM3, respectively. Proxim does not recommend using IRQ 9 for the RangeLAN2 Card. If you are using a RangeLAN2 6300 or 6330 OEM Adapter, you may be required to use an Interrupt Level and I/O Base Address specified by the manufacturer of the computing device in which the OEM adapter is installed. Consult the documentation for the computing device or contact the device's manufacturer to determine what resources should be assigned to the RangeLAN2 OEM Adapter.
