from the RE/bbs (DGS ECHO system) -- woodbridge, va. PHIL DeWITT (SYSOP) 703-590-6636 v.32bis 703-590-1441 HST (for a LITTLE while longer!) RE: SupraFAX V.32bis modem & RBBS & QModem 1) they are versitile external modems with attractive SYSOP pricing (they have now begun advertising these things widely in PC Magazine -- call their published 800# ... under $250 for V.32bis/v.42bis/MNP10/&14.4 Fax 2) these are suprisingly SMALL external modems (they're dwarfed by my older HST's), but pack a whole lot into a little space; 3) I will mention that I think they run a little hot, but since they're SO small, you won't need to stack `em and heat may not be a problem anyway; 4) with Qmodem -- just using factory defaults outta the box worked for ME on 95% of the boards I called. I just set the connect rate inside of Qmodem to 57600 and let the modem take care of everything else (using just a simple "ATZ" to initialize the modem. On a few boards, I'd get a connect, but then the screen would start to fly past me without my comm program recognizing that a connection had been made. Suggested fix [works for ME!] is a one-time fix: ... from main Qmodem prompt (before entering dialer), enter: AT&F2 -- this reloads defaults for IBM systems ATS10=30 -- this boosts time for carrier detect AT&W -- this makes this your default when next booting that's it! So far has worked flawlessly calling a large variety of boards. 5) with RBBS: alright, I'll confess I must be a mental cripple! When I read someone else' MODEM.SET I get really all turned around, because the information order just isn't "linear" from my perspective. For those of you much more clever than me, please suppress your snickers! Under RBBS's config param #225, you see questions in roughly this order: a} reset modem ATZ b} init. modem ATM0E0S2=255S10=30Q0X1S0=254W2 c} count rings ATS1? d} answer line ATQ0X1A e} go off-hook ATQ1E1H1M0 f} clr firmwre AT&F2 g} init frmwre AT&R1&S1 h} write frmwr AT&W a large number (of the apparently correct!) settings are provided when we dip into the factory settings, via "AT&F2" -- so not too many things to be reset. I may not everything right yet, but most callers from simple 2400 thru v.32 & v.32bis seem to get connected O.K. I'm not running a fossil, so I don't THINK I can lock the BBS port higher than 19200, but I *DO* lock the port at that speed and callers are getting some d/l CPS in the 1700 range.
