Internal SupraFAXModems must be configured for a unique communication port address (COM) and Interrupt Request (IRQ). They cannot share a COM or IRQ setting with any other device. They are designed as "polite" devices which means they will "disable" if any other device is configured to the same address. Some other manufacturer's modems (and most older 2400 or slower units) may not be designed to act in this "polite" manner in regard to COM and IRQ settings, and may have been functioning with such a confict. COM PORT ADDRESS CONFLICTS: If you have the modem configured to Com1 (03F8) or Com2 (02F8) and you have a serial port configured for the same setting, you must disable the serial port. This will usually entail setting some jumpers or dip switches on your I/O card or motherboard. (Simply disconnecting the wiring from the I/O card to the DB-9 or DB-25 connector will have NO affect in regard to disabling the serial port.) Remember that the modem must have it's own Com port and IRQ settings to avoid a conflict with a serial port configured in the computer. IRQ CONFLICTS: IRQ2 is usually not available in most "AT" compatible or higher machines. IRQ3 is usually used by Com2 (02F8). IRQ4 is normally used by Com1 (03F8). If you are using Com1 (03F8) which is using IRQ4, you cannot set your modem to use IRQ4. If you are using Com2 (02F8) (which uses IRQ3), you cannot set the modem to use IRQ3. Com3 (03E8) IRQ5 is usually available for use, however, many sound and special purpose cards (CD-ROM, Scanner, LPT2) may use this IRQ. When you use a non-standard setup (Standard is Com1 (03F8) IRQ 4 and Com2 (02F8) with IRQ 3), you have to make sure your software will allow you to customize which IRQ goes with the Com port that you wish to use. (Many software programs assume that Com3 (03E8) uses IRQ4 and that Com4 (02E8) uses IRQ3) The severity of the interrupt conflict varies depending on the software being utilized and it is common to see the modem respond for data operation but not the fax use with some conflicts. OTHER CONFLICTS: Things like TSR's (Terminate and Stay Resident programs), Stacker, Virus checkers, Norton Utilities/Desktop, fax software for other FAX cards or modems in the system, device drivers, etc. all have been seen to cause lack of operation or unusual function. Also we have seen problems caused by certain I/O cards with non-standard configurations (like multiple ports running on the same IRQ line). IRQCONF.TXT rev 1.1 (2/21/94phm)
