To determine the Hardware Build and supported feature set of your currently installed Modem Drivers, perform the following steps:
  1. Open the Windows 95/98 Control Panel.
  2. Double click on the Modems Icon.
  3. Choose the Diagnostics tab.
  4. Click on the COM Port which the SM56 modem is using.
  5. Click on the 'More Info..' button.
  6. Locate the line beginning with 'ATI3' text and note the full response. The response to the ATI3 command will return the version of the installed software in addition to the supported feature set. You must download the correct version or the modem driver will not update correctly. Please note the numbers which follow the text ‘AD?which appears in the modems response, this will determine your modem’s supported feature set.
Windows 95/98 compatible drivers:
  1. If your modem has AD04 in the response or has a Mic jack and a Speaker jack as well as 2 phone jacks goto AD04
  2. If your modem has AD05 in the response or has a Mic jack and two phone jacks goto AD05
  3. If your modem has AD06 in the response or has just two phone jacks goto AD06
How to install:
  1. Download the driver file.
  2. Next you need to download the SM56 PCI Cleaner either to your Desktop or to a third 1.44MB 3.5" Floppy disk by clicking here.
  3. Double-click on the driver file and the Winzip wizard will come up. In the box labeled "Unzip to Folder" erase what is in the box and replace it with C:\SM56TEMP. If necessary repeat with the second part of the drivers. You should have a total (including hidden files) of 22 files.
  4. Next double-click on the SM56 PCI Cleaner Icon. This will remove your old modem from your system.
  5. Remove any disks in your computer and close all open windows. Restart your computer
  6. When Windows restarts, it will see your modem as new hardware.
  7. Point Windows to the directory that you unzipped the driver files into C:\SM56TEMP
  8. Windows will now find Wave Device for Modem. Again point Windows to the directory C:\SM56TEMP.
  9. Windows will complete its start up and your modem will be updated.
Please read the following software upgrade instructions to install the downloaded drivers:
  1. Download the correct driver file(s) for your hardware from below, save the file(s) to your Desktop (or diskettes).
  2. Double-click on the SM56 update file(s) icon to unzip the update program.
  3. Make sure that the file is being unzipped to the same folder: C:\SM56TEMP.
  4. Click the Unzip button.
  5. Once the file is finished unzipping, click the Close button.
  6. Double-click on My Computer, double-click on the C: drive, then double-click on the folder named SM56TEMP.
  7. Double-click on the Setup program to begin updating your modem Drivers.
  8. Follow the instructions in the Setup program.

  1. Please read the following software upgrade instructions to install the downloaded drivers:
  2. Download the PCI Cleaner file and documentation below, save the files to your Desktop. Place this downloaded file into its own newly created folder. Once downloaded run the EXE file to cleanup all previously installed SM56 files.
  3. Download the correct driver file(s) for your hardware from below, save the file(s) to your Desktop (or diskettes).
  4. Double-click on the SM56 update file(s) icon to unzip the update program.
  5. Make sure that the file is being unzipped to the same folder: C:\SM56TEMP.
  6. Click the Unzip button.
  7. Once the file is finished unzipping, click the Close button.
  8. Double-click on My Computer, double-click on the C: drive, then double-click on the folder named SM56TEMP.
  9. Double-click on the Setup program to begin updating your modem Drivers.
  10. Follow the instructions in the Setup program.
