AMIGA COMPUTER SETUP Introduction: Amiga computer systems are based on the Motorola 680x0 series CPU. It also incorporates multiple proprietary co-processors to reduce load requirements on the main CPU. The Amiga is inherently a multi-tasking system, both from a hardware and an operating-system point of view. As such, it is completely unnecessary to disable multitasking for high- speed communications. It supports both XON/XOFF(software) and RTS/CTS(hardware) flow control. Standard init strings, as shown below, should be used. Definitions: Workbench - Amiga computer's Graphical User lnterface (like Windows on IBM platforms). Preferences - System configuration utility available through workbench. Priority settings - Every task running on the Amiga is assigned a task-priority number between -127 and +128. User programs are allowed to run at priorities between -127 and +20, With 0 being the standard priority. To configure your Amiga for high-speed communications, find the appropriate machine type from the list below, and follow the instructions for that unit. The list below is essentially divided according to CPU type. Configure your system preference settings in Workbench accordingly. After that, you can continue to configure your terminal software. ______________________________________________________________________ 68000 CPU (Stock A500, A600. A1000. A2000 computers) 19,200 bps Maximum transfer rate. Preference Settings: * Baudrate: 19,200. * Buffer size: At least 16KBytes. * CTS/RTS or XON/XOFF Terminal Settings: * Set software's Priority to at least 10. * Set the Terminal's buffer size to the same as the Preference's buffer size. * Standard hardware flow control or software flow control init string: Hardware flow control string - AT&F&B1&H1&R2 Software flow control string - AT&F&B1&H2&I2 _______________________________________________________________________ 68020/30/40 CPU (Stock A1200. A2500. A3000, A4000, accelerated A500. A1000 or A2000) 38,400 bps Maximum transfer rate. 57,600 bps with high-speed serial port. Preference Settings: * Baud rate: 38,400 * Buffer size: At least l6KBytes. * CTS/RTS or XON/XOFF Terminal Settings: * Set the Terminal's buffer size to the same as the Preference's buffer size. * Priority is not as important with these units, but if you find you are still losing characters, set the priority to a higher value. i.e. 5 or 10. * Standard hardware flow control or software flow control init string.
