WinRPI and Quicklink ][ The U.S. Robotics Sportster Si requires the use of RPI drivers in order to use flow control and error correction. This driver will only function in Windows, not in DOS. If you use the modem in DOS, it will function, but without error correction or flow control, unless you have a terminal program in DOS that provides RPI capabilities. To install the WinRPI drivers, make sure you do not have the modem installed. This means that if the modem is an internal, do not have it in your ISA slot and if it's an external, make sure you do not have the Si attached to an external COM Port. If the modem was installed prematurely, the COM test program will think that port is being used by another device. It will see the device in that port and IRQ and try to locate another acceptable port and IRQ address. Next, insert the QuickLink ][ diskette into your drive and start Windows. Click on File, then Run. Type a:install. A dialog box will appear, where you should make sure that "compression and Error Correction" and "QuickLink ][ Fax for Windows" are both checked. The program will then install QuickLink onto your system. After the installation is complete, ComTest will begin. Select recommend settings for a new modem and click `Next'. On the next screen, select whether you have an Internal or External modem and click 'Next'. Once ComTest is complete, write down the suggested settings, you will need them later. You can now shut off your system and install the modem. After you are done installing the modem, go back into Windows. Under the QuickLink Fax program group, click on the WinRPI icon. This will install the WinRPI drivers on your system. Choose to restart Windows. After restart, click on the WinRPI icon again. It should say `the WinRPI drivers are properly setup'. If it does not, try reinstalling again. You now have the RPI drivers installed as your COM Port driver. What this means, is it changed comm.drv=comm.drv in your Windows SYSTEM.INI file from comm.drv=comm.drv, to comm.drv=wrpi.drv. This is the only change it makes to your ini files. To run QuickLink for the first time, click on the QuickLink icon. Once loaded, the program will ask you to have it detect the port the modem is on, or for you to select the port. Select the option you want. If autodetect does not work, you can always select Setup/Modem Settings in Quicklink to change it. If you find that you are experiencing spontaneous disconnects, try lowering the port rate to 38400 or 19200. This should resolve the problem for you. Windows 95 We have found that the Sportster Si and WinRPI driver will work fine under the release version of Windows 95. Also, the driver will only function with current 16-bit communication programs, not 32-bit programs. This is because WinRPI is a 16-bit driver, not 32-bit. Note: When running communication programs other than Quicklink, make sure you add +H11 to the end of your software's init string. What this does, is activate the software flow control and error correction.
