Winmodem Upgrade/Update Installation Notes Note: You must uninstall your previous version of the Winmodem software before installing this version(explained below in SECTION II). If you have problems during installation, and are unsure which version of Windows 95 you are running, open up the Control Panel and click the System icon. The version number is listed on that screen. (ex. 4.00.950 B is the OEM Service Release 2 (OSR/2)). Creating the Installation Disk Note: Actual installation of the software drivers should be done on a locked floppy disk. We strongly suggest extracting the files to a blank floppy diskette. Do not use the original Winmodem disk. To extract the files, type the following: C:\WINM336.EXE -d A: * The -d in the above instruction, is extremely important. This is what tells the software to extracts the files into their appropriate subdirectories. Installation will not be successful if this is left out. * The C:\ in the above instruction is the location where the WINM336.EXE file was downloaded to. You can either type in the correct path where the file is located on your system, or leave out the path and change into the directory where the file is located. You should now have a floppy disk with the following contents and subdirectories: A:\CTL3DV2.DLL A:\INSTALL.EXE A:\README.TXT A:\SETUP.INF A:\USRDRVR.003 A:\WINMDM2.INF A:\WINMODEM.38_ A:\WINMODEM.BM_ A:\WINMODEM.DRV A:\WINMODEM.EXE A:\WMCONFIG.EXE A:\WMDIAG.EXE A:\WMINSTAL.DLL A:\WMUNINST.EXE A:\WMREGCLN.EXE A:\FILE_ID.DIZ A:\USRDRVR.003\INSTUB.EXE A:\USRDRVR.003\WINMDMX.DLL A:\USRDRVR.003\WINMODEM.CPL A:\USRDRVR.003\WINMODEM.DRV A:\USRDRVR.003\WINMODEM.EXE A:\USRDRVR.003\WINMODEM.VXD A:\USRDRVR.003\WMMODEM.IN~ A:\USRDRVR.003\WMPORT.IN~ Once you have verified that the files are correct, lock the disk with the write-protect tab on the disk. Section I: This section describes how to install the Winmodem software on your system for the first time. If you have installed, or attempted to install, the Winmodem software before, proceed to Section II. 1. If you have not previously installed the Winmodem, you should not need to make any changes to your system. However, if during the install, you see a message that states you should reboot, and it does not show the com port, select NO. If the install does not continue, it is OK to reboot. We suggest you shut down Windows 95 and reboot manually. 2. During the install, if you see a message stating a file could not be found and it is pointing to the drive/directory Windows 95 was installed from, type A: ( replacing the drive/directory it is pointing to) and continue the installation. Make sure you have your newly created Winmodem floppy in the drive. 3. To check the install, go to the Control Panel and click on the Winmodem icon. If the install failed, a screen should appear stating that files are corrupt and they need to be cleaned up. Let the system clean up the files and restart Windows 95. If the modem is not found on startup, run WMREGCLN.EXE from the install disk. This can be run from the DOS prompt or Explorer. Power down and restart Windows 95. Windows 95 should then detect the modem and run through the full install. 4. If the modem does not respond to commands, you may want to uninstall and reinstall one more time. Uninstall using the Uninstall button in the Winmodem Control Panel window. Do not use Remove Hardware and do not try to install using Add New Hardware. Always power down and restart the computer. The modem must be detected on startup to install correctly. Section II: Use the steps below if you attempted to installed a previous version of the software and it failed, or need to install a new version. This version of the installation will correctly install the Winmodem on older versions, as well as the OEM Service Release 2 (OSR/2) version, of Windows 95. If you have already attempted to install an older version of the software on OSR/2, certain steps may become necessary to reinstall. 1. If you have the ability to run the uninstaller from the Winmodem Control Panel, you should do so. This situation is unlikely to occur in a failed installation. 2. When you start Windows 95, if you do not see a 'New Hardware Found' window, you should: A. Go to Control Panel/System Icon/Device Manager and look for unknown or other devices. If the Winmodem is listed, highlight it and click remove. After it has been removed, shut down Windows 95 and restart. OR B. Run WMREGCLN.EXE from the installation floppy. Shut down Windows 95 and restart. GO TO SECTION I Section III: TROUBLE SHOOTING: 1. Should the OSR/2 installation fail, the first step toward resolution will be to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and issue the following commands from the C:\> prompt. (Note: The files will be permanently removed from your system. Use extreme caution when issuing these commands.): DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINMODEM.101 DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINMODEM.* Note: If Windows 95 is installed in a directory other than C:\WINDOWS, the first command will generate no response and the second command will indicate that the path was not found. In such a case, modify the command to correspond with the location of Windows 95. 2. While still in DOS, insert the installation floppy and type: A:\WMDIAG.EXE. 3. Verify that the Winmodem is operating correctly by running the Plug and Play Search for Cards, then Card Configuration and Diagnostics. Exit the program when you are finished. 4. Attempt a second installation by typing: WIN. Wait for Windows 95 to detect the new hardware and install as prompted. (Do not go to Add New Hardware. The modem must be found on Windows 95 startup.) 5. Should the second attempt at installation fail, do the following: From a DOS prompt: * Go to C:\WINDOWS\INF (the INF directory may be hidden) * Type DEL *.bin * Type DEL oem*.inf * Go to C:\WINDOWS\INF\OTHER * Type DEL usro*.* * Go back to SECTION I
