Configuring a PortServer (II), PortServer TS and Digi One Device Server for RealPort in Windows NT, 2000 or XP

Procedure

  1. Connect a terminal (or PC with terminal emulation software) to port 1 on the PortServer.  Both the PortServer and your
    peripheral devices power switches must be OFF.
    NOTE: If the cable that you receive with the PortServer does NOT say crossover on it, you will need a null modem cable
    to connect to the cable provided with the PortServer product.  This may also require a gender changer.
  2. To use Hyperterminal, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Communication, Hyperterminal (see Figure 1).

  3. Type in a name, and choose an icon.  It really doesn't matter what you choose for either.  Choose OK when finished.
    (see Figure 2).

  4. In the Connect using drop down box, choose the serial com port you have the cable connected to on your PC.
    Choose OK when finished (see Figure 3).

  5. You will need to be configured for VT100, Bits per second to 9600, 8N1 and Flow Control to none (see Figure 4).

  6. Power up the PortServer.  When AC shows on the PortServer, press Enter.  You should get a login prompt.  Log in
    as root (see Figure 5).  Press Enter.

  7. The default password is dbps (see Figure 6).  Press Enter.

  8. Configure the PortServer's network attributes by typing set config and press enter to set:
    a. An IP address for the PortServer 
    b. An optional  DNS name for the PortServer (on the myname field)
    c. A required TCP port number for RealPort (realport=771)
    Example

    set config ip=199.86.5.160 myname=PSII realport=771

  9. Verify the network settings by reissuing the set config command (without parameters) and then ensuring that the settings are appropriate (see Figure 7).

  10. Configure the PortServer ports by supplying a set port command that specifies the following:
    a. The range of ports to configure for RealPort (on the range field) 
    b. dev=rp
    Example

    set port ra=2-16 dev=rp

  11. Verify the port settings by reissuing the set port command (without parameters) and then ensuring that the settings are appropriate (see Figure 8).

  12. Now you are ready to proceed with the driver installation.
