C/X Remote with USR Courier Modem Setup
The C/X and EPC/X concentrator systems can be setup for remote
operation with a variety of synchronous links. The setup below is
for a pair of USR Courier modems using Voice/Data Dialing over
standard dialup phone lines. Note: Prior to installing the
C/CON or EPC/CON at a remote site, all of the components must be
set up and tested at the Host Adapter location.
This installation was tested with:
- An installed C/X Host Adapter (line at 8W/RS232, clock speed of 19200) and C/CON Unit
- A pair of USR Courier modems (V.34 or V.Everything)
- A pair of Digi RS232 Synchronous Modem cables
- A pair of working dialup lines
- A dumb terminal with DB25 cable to send commands to the modem
- Connect one of the modems to a terminal. Set the DIP switches
3, 8, and 10 down (on), all others up (off). Power the modem
off, then on again. Send the following AT command to the modem:
AT&F&R&S&X&N14&M1&W .
- Take the modem from step 1, and turn the power off. Change
the DIP switch settings so that 1 and 4 are down (on), the rest up
(off). Unplug the terminal from the modem, and connect it instead
to the Host Adapter with the RS232 Synchronous cable. Plug a
working phone line into the jack marked Jack on the back of the
modem. Label this modem as Host Modem.
- Set DIP switches on the other modem to 3, 5, 8, and 10 down
(on), all others up (off). Power the modem off, then on again.
Connect the terminal to this modem and send the following command:
AT&ZC=&F&R&S&X2&N14&M1DT
The phone number will be that of the phone line connected to the
Host Modem in step 2. Now send command:
ATS32=9&W
- Take the modem from step 3, and turn it off. Change the DIP
switch setting to 1, 4, and 5 down (on), all others up (off).
Unplug the terminal from the modem, and connect it instead to the
C/CON unit. Plug a working phone line into the jack marked Jack on
the back of the modem. Label this modem as Dialing Modem.
- The modems are set for slave-clocked synchronous operation with
forced DTR. Forced DTR is necessary for modem operation since this
signal is not provided for on the cable. Internal/slave clocking is
necessary to provide a steady clock signal on the remote link.
- To establish the link between the Dialing and Host Modems, push
the Answ/Orig switch on the front of the Dialing Modem to make it
dial. The Dialing Modem should go off hook, dial the phone number
programmed into memory, and establish a synchronous connection with
the Host Modem. At this point, turn the C/CON unit on and it should
go from P1--P2--P4--AC. The link is now operational.
- Now, all that remains will be to move the Dialing Modem and
C/CON unit to the desired remote location, plug everything in, and
redo step 6. When you get AC on the C/CON, your work is
complete.
