EtherLite in 2000/XP FAQ
EtherLite in 2000/XP FAQ EtherLite in 2000/XP FAQ

  1. What driver should I install for my EtherLite product under Windows 2000/XP?
The latest driver can be downloaded at: http://supportold.digi.com/support/drivers/win2000/index-els.html
This is the RealPort driver for the EtherLite products under Windows Windows 2000/XP.

  2. What firmware version should I install for my EtherLite product under Windows 2000/XP?
The latest firmware can be downloaded at: http://supportold.digi.com/support/firmware/els/index.html
Download the RealPort firmware for the specific EtherLite product you have.
NOTE: Make sure you download the firmware for the RealPort driver and NOT the Standard Driver.

  3. How do I assign an IP address to the EtherLite?
If you do not already have the DgIpServ utility, you can download it from the following link:
    http://supportold.digi.com/support/utilities/sts_els/.  The Filename is
40002241_B.zip.  Extract this zip file and run DgIpServ.exe.
NOTE: Do not plug the power cable into the EtherLite module at this time.
NOTE: For step by step instructions go to the DgIpServ.exe Guide.
    A.  Run DgIpServ.
    B.  Choose Store IP Settings and click Next.
    C.  Enter the MAC Address (last 6 digits).  This will be on a bar code sticker located on
          the EtherLite.  Click Next.
    D.  Enter the IP Address of the EtherLite and click Next.

    E.  Power-cycle the EtherLite and you should see the message on the output screen
          change.
    F.  Go to a command prompt and verify the IP Address has been assigned by pinging it.

  4. How do I check the firmware version and upgrade it?
If you do not already have the DgIpServ utility, you can download it from the following link:
    http://supportold.digi.com/support/utilities/sts_els/.  The Filename is
40002241_B.zip.  Extract this zip file and run DgIpServ.exe.
You will also need to download the verlog utility to check the current firmware version.  You can download it from the following link: http://ftp.digi.com/support/utilities/sts_els/
NOTE: For step by step instructions go to the Firmware Upgrade Guide.
    A.  Run Verlog.exe and enter the IP Address of the EtherLite to verify the firmware version
          you are currently running.
NOTE: You will need to make sure you are running the RealPort firmware, if you are
          loading the RealPort driver.
    B.  Download the proper firmware file and extract it into a directory (i.e. digi) you will be
          able to locate later.
    C.  Run DgIpServe.
    D.  Select Update firmware and click Next.
    E.  Locate the firmware file *.bin you downloaded.  Select the file and click Open.
    F.  Enter the MAC Address (last 6 digits).  This will be on a bar code sticker located on
          the EtherLite.  Click Next.
    G.  Enter the IP Address of the EtherLite and click Next.
    H.  Power-cycle the EtherLite.
     I.   It should say starting firmware update.
    J.   When it is done, it should say Transfer Complete! on the Configuration Progress
          screen.
    K.  You can rerun Verlog.exe to verify the version of the firmware has now been upgraded.

  5. How do I install the driver under Windows 2000/XP?
For step by step instructions go to the Installation Guide.

  6. I configured an IP Address for the EtherLite, but the driver won't install.
Verify the firmware version on the EtherLite.  You need to be running at least firmware version 1.2 to install the Realport driver.  If you are not, you will need to upgrade the firmware.
You can check the firmware version by downloading the verlog utility from the following link: http://ftp.digi.com/support/utilities/sts_els/.
  7. I am having problems communicating to the EtherLite.
Download BOOTPS.exe to determine if the EtherLite can be seen on the network.  You can download it from the following link: http://ftp.digi.com/support/utilities/sts_els/
    A. If you get the MAC Address back, you are setting the EtherLite and should be able to assign and IP Address, Update the Firmware and install the driver without any problem.
    B. If you are not getting the MAC Address back, verify:
        a. You are not running DHCP.
        b. The system you are trying to get to the EtherLite from, has a single NIC (Network Card).  If there is more then
one Network Card in the machine, you will need to temporarily disable one.
        c. You are on the same subnet (system and EtherLite).
        d. Verify you are using a dumb 10mb hub.  Some switches and routers do not pass BOOTP requests and thus
you will not be able to communicate to the EtherLite.  NOTE: We have seen this with some autosensing hubs as
             well.

If BOOTPS.exe passes and you can assign an IP Address, but cannot load the driver:
    1. Verify that you are running the latest firmware (see #6).
    2. Verify that you are not blocking socket 771 on the network or firewall.  This is the socket RealPort uses to talk to
         the EtherLite.
  8. During firmware/IP Address changes, DGIPSERV starts with "changing settings..." or "updating firmware..." but nothing happens.

Make sure that when you power cycle the EtherLite you wait 10 seconds to let the EtherLite properly shut down before
    reconnecting the power cable.

  9. When I run verlog/rlogin and select run statistics from the menu option, I get the following and need help with some of the statistics being reported.

    --- Ethernet Transmit Stats ---
    total pkts    0008595545
    underflow    0000000001                        one retry 0000013250

    bad address  0000563101                       discarded 0000000000
    ___________________________________________________________
Deferred = Network was busy before Transmit.
Overflow = When we are not able to keep up with with the receive string on the other network controller.
Bad Address = an IP packet was received that was not for us (like a broadcast).
One retry = we started sending a packet and there was a collision.
More retries = This looks at a retransmit after the first collision, this monitors collisions from 2nd through the 16th collision.
Retry Limit = the number of packets that have had more than 16 collisions. The packet is not sent again.
Missed Pkts = Due to overflow
    .

  10. The ON LED does not come on anymore.
Try to connect via Boot Console and reset the EtherLite using the "reset" command:
    http://supportold.digi.com/support/kbase/ta-inktomi.php/view/20020815130204/
If that doesn't work, you may need to send in the unit for repair as the unit has been corrupted.

  11. I am having problems with this process or need further assistance.
