How do I install Digi ISDN
Win95/98 drivers?
Before you start, verify that Dial-Up Networking is installed in your system.
(Start->Programs->Accessories menu to verify). If it is not part of the
menu system, you could add this software element using "Add/remove Programs"
in Control panel.
-
Double-click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in Control Panel.
-
Click on "Windows Setup" Tab.
-
Select the "Communications" row and then click on Details button.
-
Make sure that Dial-Up Networking is "checked".
-
Click OK.
-
Windows will copy files to the system and will prompt you accordingly.
Installation Instructions for Dial-Up Adapter (Microsoft's logical adapter)
Having Double-clicked the Network icon in Control Panel: If the Dial-Up
adapter is not already present.
-
Click Add, click Adapter in the list, then click Add.
-
You are prompted with "Select Network adapters" dialog box.
-
Under Manufacturers select "Microsoft" and under Network Adapters select
"Dial-Up Adapter".
-
Press OK.
Installation Instructions for Digi Adapters
Note: Dial-Up Networking and Dial-Up Adapter should be installed prior
to installation of the Digi Adapters. Verify the previous three installation
procedures.
1. Having Double-clicked the Network icon in Control Panel.
-
Click Add, click Adapter in the list, then click Add.
-
When prompted, click Have Disk.
-
Enter the location of the Digi driver files, then Click OK. This will either
be the directory to which the driver was downloaded, or the diskette you
received from Digi.
-
In the list, select Digi International as your Manufacturer, select the
type of Digi Network Adapter you wish to install, then click OK.
Note: You may not be prompted for a Manufacturer. In this case, simply
select the Digi Network Adapter you wish to install.
-
Click OK.
2. You will be asked to enter your I/O address range. Make sure that the
I/0 address selected matches the jumper settings on your board. For the
PCIMAC family of adapters, you will also be asked to enter your memory
address. Select an available memory address based on what is available
for your machine. You can view used memory by double-clicking on the System
icon in the Control Panel, clicking on the Device Manager tab, double-clicking
on Computer, and then clicking Memory.
3. Click OK.
4. The configuration wizard will now start. After reading the first
screen, Click Next.
5. Enter your switch protocol. For most US installations, this will
be NI-1. In Europe, this will be typically EDSS. If you are not sure which
switch type to use, contact your telephone company. Click Next.
6. Enter your SPIDs (US only) and phone numbers.
7. Click Next to continue, and then Finish.
NOTE: During the copy operation, Windows 95 over-writes some of its
own system files. If a dialog box appears reporting that a file on your
system (eg: NDIS.VXD) has a later date than the one being copied, keepthe
more recent file. That is, answer "Yes" meaning you will keep the one on
your system and skip the copy operation for that file.
8. Restart your computer. Note: To reconfigure your card (SPIDs and, or
Phone Numbers), use the Start menu icon: Choose: Programs->Accessories->ISDN
tools->ISDN Configuration Wizard.
How do I know if the driver installed correctly?
First, check for any error messages during system bootup in Event Viewer.
This will let you know if you have a conflict or problem. You could also
check to see in ISDN ports show up in Dial Up Networking.
Second, run Digi's line trace diagnostics. The diag pcitrace.exe and
isatrace.exe (previuously called trace.exe) is used to trace incoming or outgoing ISDN calls to see if they
are connecting correctly. Or if disconnecting where the disconnect is coming
from and the cause code as to why. A text file (dgtrcbri.txt) explains how to
run this and what the output means. Both diags can be found on driver diskettes:

What should I try next if Digi ISDN Win95/98 driver fails to load?
-
Make sure Dial up Networking is loaded before doing install.
-
Make sure a protocol (NetBEUI, IPX, or TCP/IP) is already loaded in Control
Panel -> Network before doing Digi driver install.
-
Use a I/O port address in the 300 range. Datafire 350. PC/IMAC 320 100
range is prone to conflicts
-
Load driver from Control Panel -> Add New Hardware or Network Add Do not
load from Network Neighborhood, this will fail.
-
If ISA bus, reseat or try another slot. Move away from PCI shared slots.
-
Make sure drivers fully removed before reloading
-
Sound card (i.e SoundBlaster) can cause conflicts. Remove and Retry.
-
Double check you ISDN switch type (in U.S. also check for proper SPIDs)
Note: To reconfigure setup (SPIDs and/or Phone Numbers), use the start
menu button: Choose: Programs->Accessories->ISDN tools->ISDN Configuration

Problems with incoming/outgoing PPP calls to other ISDN vendors
products
PPP call problem under NT 4.0 Goto Dial Up Networking -> Phone Book
Entry -> More -> Edit entry -> Server and try unchecking one or both of
the boxes for Enable Software Compression and Enable PPP LCP Extensions
PPP call problem under NT 3.5.1 Goto RAS phone book entry -> Network
icon and uncheck Request LCP Extensions box
Authentication method must be PAP. This is because Microsoft Win NT
uses a proprietary version of CHAP. Most other vendors are supporting MD5
CHAP (i.e. Cisco, Ascend, etc.). MD5 CHAP encrypts the password and continues
to issue challenges periodically, while Win95/Win NT CHAP though they encrypt
the password, only sends challenge once. So unless the ISDN device you
are using also supports Win NT CHAP you must use PAP.
PPP protocol must be Sync PPP. Digi ISDN Win NT driver does not support
V.110, V.120, or X.75. If using a terminal adapter you will need to select
an async to sync PPP configuration.

2nd number separated by colon. All entered in Telephone Number field (area

call - works certain conditions)

Does my Datafire (or PC/IMAC) require an NT1?
An NT1 (network terminator 1) is a device which provides an interface
between the two-wire twisted pairs used by telephone companies in their
ISDN Basic Rate (BRI) network and an end-user's four-wire terminal equipment.
Any Digi Intl ISDN product with a S/T interface will require an external
NT1. Any Digi Intl ISDN product with a U interface will already have a
builtin NT1.
In North America, you have to buy and maintain your own NT1 device.
The telephone company offers end-users a U interface. In Europe and Japan,
the telephone company provides the NT1, owns it, and offers end-users a
S/T interface directly. In North America, some ISDN equipment vendors offer
devices which connect directly to the U interface (for example, the Datafire
U). If you have one of these devices, you don't need to buy a separate
NT1. The U interface can't be built in to the device when it's offered
for sale in Europe or Japan.
How can I check Win95 system for possible I/O conflicts?
Select Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System Select Device Manager
-> Print
This will print a list of all system resources, including memory addresses,
I/O port, IRQ, system memory, etc.
How can I use AT command string with the Datafire?
The Datafire board is like an ISDN ethernet board. And since it does
not emulate a modem you can not do AT commands to it, so those applications
are not supported.
