GAP/SVR4 Dial-in Modem Configuration
GAP/SVR4 Dial-in Modem Configuration GAP/SVR4 Dial-in Modem Configuration

Dial-in Modem Configuration requires familiarity with both the specific OS and the specific modem being used. While the following procedure is sufficient for most cases, it may be necessary to take additional steps to properly configure your modem or to set up the OS for a specific application.

1) The Cable

Use the Standard Modem Cable as diagrammed in the Digi Standard Cable section.

2) The UnixWare Server:

  • scoadmin
    --> hardware --> serial manager --> view --> boards
    Select Digi product from the list
    --> view -->ports
    Select port from the list
  • Modify Terminal Port for proper parameters
    --> port --> modify
      Note: Modems usually use
    • (a01m) Modem
    • Incoming and outgoing
    • A fixed baud rate (38400)
    • Advance options allow changes to character bits and stop bits
  • In /usr/lib/uucp/Devices, the modem entry look like this:
    	 Direct term/a01m,M - 38400 direct_modem
    Note: An ACU line may be necessary for correct operation of the modem in dialout applications. Refer to your modem manual or to the modem manufacturer for the correct modem initialization string to use for your modem. Refer to the SCO Administration handbook for guidance on setting up an appropriate ACU entry that uses this initialization string.

  • Connect and configure the modem:
    	cu -l /dev/term/a01m -s 38400    [may need to use a01s instead]
    	at&w [train modem to port speed]
    	~. [ tilde period, to end cu ]
    			[depending on the modem it may be necessary to
    			do ats0=1&w to enable auto-answer]
  • Carrier Detect

    If the port is wired with 8 wire cable, put the command:
    ditty altpin /dev/term/a01s in the /etc/rc2.d/S99digi file.

      Possible error messages when attempting cu to the modem:
    • SYSTEM NOT IN Systems FILE: missing or incorrect entry in /etc/uucp/Systems
    • NO DEVICES AVAILABLE: missing or incorrect entry in /etc/uucp/Devices
    • CAN'T ACCESS DEVICE: owner or permissions incorrect on /dev/term/a01s
    • DEVICE LOCKED: remove /usr/spool/uucp/LCK..tty[whatever] this can be caused by the lack of an ACU entry in the Devices file
    • DIALER [whatever] -- the ACU entry in /etc/uucp/Devices is incorrect, refer to the modem and system operators manuals
    *In Unixware/SVR4, the modem control device is for dial-in, the standard device is for dial-out and configuration:
    DeviceDialinDialout/Printer/Terminal
    xem, c/x, epc/x
    and portserver
    term/a01mterm/a01s
    xe and xiterm/i1Aterm/i1a
    xrterm/r1Aterm/r1a
