Characters Display Very Slowly when using Hyperterminal with a Loopback plug on a Digi Device/Terminal Server running RealPort.
Characters Display Very Slowly when using Hyperterminal with a Loopback plug on a Digi Device/Terminal Server running RealPort. Characters Display Very Slowly when using Hyperterminal with a Loopback plug on a Digi Device/Terminal Server running RealPort.

Symptom:

A simple way to test a Digi Device/Terminal server port running RealPort is to connect a loopback plug to the port and then use a terminal emulation program such as Hyperterminal to connect to the port. With the loopback in place, characters typed into Hyperterminal window should display on the screen.  Howerver, when using Hyperterminal with RealPort, the response is very slow.

Cause:

This is a known issue with Hyperterminal.

Solution:

1. Use another terminal emulation program such as TeraTerm, Procomm, etc..  Digi has a simple TTY program available at ftp://ftp.digi.com/support/utilities/win2k_xp/ you can also use.

2. Connect using a TCP socket.  This can be done in most versions of Hyperterminal.  Select "Connect Using TCP/IP (WinSock)".  Enter the IP address of the Digi Device/Terminal server and 2000 + the port number you want to connect to.
For example, port 1 it would be 2001.

3. Ignore the problem as it really isn't a problem. As long as the characters echo on the screen, the port should be working fine.
As long as you use Hyperterminal, you may just see a delay in the display of the characters as you type.
