Digi EIA-422 Connector Wiring

Use the information below to find the pin assignments for EIA-422 models of EtherLite Terminal Servers.

A terminal, a serial printer, or a serial port for another computer usually functions as a DTE device. The Digi terminal server is also a DTE device. To connect a DTE device to another DTE device a null modem cable or adapter must be used.

Two wires (one twisted pair) are required for each EIA-422 signal, a positive lead ("+"), and a negative lead ("-"). The "+" leads at one end of the cable must be connected to the "+" leads at the other end, and the "-" leads at one end must be connected to the "-" leads at the other end.

Incorrect wiring could result in damage to the connected devices. The following table shows the pin configuration for the EIA-422 versions of Digi EtherLite Terminal Servers.

Signal Description RJ-45 Pin
RTS* Request To Send (EIA-232) 1
RxD- Received Data (-) 2
DCD* Data Carrier Detect (EIA-232) 3
RxD+ Received Data (+) 4
TxD+ Transmitted Data (+) 5
SG* Signal Ground (EIA-232) 6
TxD- Transmitted Data (-) 7
CTS Clear To Send (EIA-232) 8

*RTS and DCD are available, but remain single-ended EIA-232 signals, and require Signal Ground (pin 6) as a reference.
