Windows 2000: Testing the Port Connection

Use this troubleshooting procedure to test the port connection from the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system.

Procedure

Note: Before disconnecting any cabling, ensure you have disabled the services (if you have already enabled them) on that port. 

  1. Place the loopback plug in the port you want to test.
  2. Access Windows 2000 HyperTerminal by choosing Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal > HyperTerminal.
  3. Under Connection Description, enter a New Connection name and choose OK.
  4. Under Connect To, choose the port you desire to test and choose OK.
  5. Ignore the port settings and choose OK.

    The lower left hand on the window should display a connection time.  

  6. Type anything.
  7. Choose File > Exit  to exit the procedure.
