Testing a Port

Use this procedure to test a Digi port.

  1. Disable login (if it is enabled) and any other services or processes open on the port.
  2. Perform one or more of the following tests on the port. The PortAssist Manager loopback test is the most flexible of these tests.

    PortAssist Manager Loopback Test

See the PortAssist Manager topic Diagnostics and Resolutions.

PortAssist Manager allows you to perform either a full loopback test with a loopback plug installed on the port, or an echo test with a terminal connected to the port.

    Digi Port Authority Loopback Test

See Performing a Loopback Test using DPA.

This test sends information through a loopback plug attached to the port.  It tests all the signals on the port.

    Basic Loopback Test

See Testing a Port with a Loopback Plug.

This test sends information through a loopback plug and back to the console. It tests the ports ability to transmit and receive data.

    Dumb Terminal Echo Test

See Testing a Port with a Dumb Terminal.

This test sends information to a dumb terminal attached to the port.  It tests the port's ability to transmit data.

  3. If any of these tests fail, verify that your terminal and operating system settings for the port agree. Specifically but not exclusively, look at flow control, baud rate, data bits, stop bits and parity. Also, check your cable to see that it is wired correctly and that it is of sufficient quality.

  4. If you make corrections in the previous step, retest the port. Enable the port for login again if necessary.
  5. If you cannot get a test to pass, contact Digi Technical Support.
