Conducting the Echo Test

Use this topic to perform an echo test to determine the validity of  your transmissions

The counters measure bytes of information. If the test is successful, the same number of bytes transmitted are the same number that appear on your terminal. If the test is unsuccessful, you will need to determine which component is not working properly.

Procedure

  1. Attach an available, dedicated terminal to the port you are working with.
  2. Go to the Serial Summary screen in PortAssist Manager for the port on which you are working.
  3. Choose Test on the port you are working.
  4. Configure the test by choosing the correct Baud Rate and Data Format.
  5. Choose Start Test
  6. Type a few characters on the dedicated terminal.
  7. If the same characters are echoed back (or appear) on the dedicated terminal, the test would be considered successful. Go to step #10 .

If the characters are not echoed back on the dedicated terminal, the test is a failure and you must perform a troubleshooting routine to determine the cause of the failure. Continue with the next step.

  8. Test the port with the loopback test. Perform this test on  the port you are using and at least one other port that doesn't share the same driver.
  9. Ensure you have properly selected the correct Baud Rate and Data Format.
  10. Check the cable attached to the terminal to see if it is working properly. If you still cannot communicate with the terminal, call Digi Tech Support for additional help.
  11. Note the results. The screen will be refreshed every 10, 15 or 30 seconds depending on which time you configured.
  12. Choose Stop Test once you have taken note of the results of the test.
  13. Or if you want to continue testing this port but want to test other ports or perform other tasks, choose Return to Monitoring. Display Results will appear in the port you are continuing to test.

  14. To return to this port, choose Display Results.
